06/02/2010:  Jan may have been cold in UK but world average was hot

While Northern Europe had some cold weather, the world average temperature as recorded by satellite was for the warmest January in the 32 years of satellite recording. Australia had its hottest day for 108 years etc.
Don't be misled by local weather, which in any case shows disruption of normal climate patterns.
